About me

Hello! I am Vernon Reed, aka VR, and my involvement with art and technology goes back to my development of the novel art form of cybernetic wearables in the last century. vernonreed.com/cyberjewels.htm   I later pursued early experimentation with computer-mediated virtual worlds (the Metaverse), creating a new paradigm for subjectivity in cyberspace based on dissociation. vernonreed.com/research.htm   I eventually discovered a love for teaching late in life and I have taught video game development for the last 15 years.

My current passion—and the subject of this blog—is the fast-evolving field known as Generative AI. In current usage this means training Deep Neural Networks on vast amounts of data and then employing text prompts to generate meaningful, human-readable visual or textual outputs. My particular focus is on the creative potentials of these AIs, considering them more as collaborators with human artists, rather than simply as tools.

In my cyborg period. Each vacuum-formed acrylic ear dome contained a miniature speaker which was fed a sine wave tone from an electronic oscillator. The frequency of this tone was controlled by the amount of light falling on a photocell—a really bright light would cause the frequency to go so high it became ultrasonic. Walking around resulted in a novel musical experience. We rarely have the same amount of light on both sides of our heads, so in addition to the psychical tones coming from the oscillators, the wearer’s brain would also be synthesizing harmonics and overtones of the differentials.
